What is cultural exchange and why is it so important?

Build a global perspective and come home with new tools to navigate the modern world

Af Projects Abroad | 22 maj 2026

Picture this: you’ve been living with a host family in a new country for a few days. As you settle down for dinner, through wild gestures and broken sentences in two languages, the whole table breaks out in laughter at the same joke.

Despite the language barrier and your vastly different experiences, you’ve managed to reach a mutual understanding. Your culture defines who you are, your traditions, beliefs, and how you view the world, but it doesn’t stop us from connecting and sharing ideas.

Our projects prioritise cultural exchange, especially for our teen participants. Read on to find out why this is such a crucial aspect of your personal development.

Cultural exchange is more important than ever

The world has never been more connected, but it has also never been easier to stay within your ‘Bubble’. With social media algorithms designed to keep you in an echo chamber of people with similar views, it can be difficult to branch out, make new friends, and find new ideas.

It can be very easy to fall into a trap of reinforcing those views, limiting your inspiration, and potentially feeling isolated. You trap yourself in a sort of social comfort zone, which can be hard to break out of.

By interacting with people from different backgrounds, you will see the world in new ways and develop cultural intelligence, which are vital skills for life, but also your university and career.

You’re forced to think outside the box, approach problems differently, and develop what’s known as a global perspective; giving you a different way of seeing the world and understanding global challenges.

To get the most out of cultural exchange, listen and understand what people are saying and sharing, but don’t ignore the differences. You should approach the experience with an open mind, respect, and a willingness to learn. Understanding those differences are exactly how you learn and grow.

The easiest way to do that? Travel the world, see new things, meet incredible people, and have unforgettable experiences along the way. That’s where we come in.

Cultural exchange can build several vital skills

Travelling the world and engaging in cultural exchange is a learning experience unlike anything else. You’ll discover very quickly that you’re capable of so much more than you thought possible.

As discussed, cultural intelligence is just one skill that you can develop, and as global business evolves, a broad cultural understanding becomes even more important.

Your culture and your language influences the way in which you see and understand the world. By gaining exposure to different ways of thinking, you become more adaptable and understanding of different viewpoints.

Travelling the world also builds confidence, independence, and adaptability, as you step outside your comfort zone and navigate life in an unfamiliar environment. You’ll need to improvise, learn to communicate, and try new things every day.

This sort of travel and exchange also helps develop empathy, as you engage with and understand the challenges faced by people and communities all around the world. These could be environmental, educational, societal, or anything else.

At the end of your experience, you’ll come home with a totally new perspective on life and a renewed appreciation for your own culture, lifestyle, and circumstances.

Why consider cultural exchange with Projects Abroad?

While you will travel with us independently, you’ll always have us there to support you. That means you can enjoy the travel experience of your dreams with total peace of mind. We’ll be there to support you, whenever and wherever you need us.

Our staff are available 24/7 in-destination if you have any questions, concerns, or issues during your time travelling with us. On our High School Specials for teenagers, that is elevated to 24/7 supervision.

We also help you prepare for your trip with comprehensive pre-departure support, ensuring that you know what to pack, what to expect, and understand the culture ahead of time.

In many destinations, you’ll stay with a carefully vetted host family, making the experience that much more authentic. This will make you truly feel like a local, and they’ll even home-make authentic meals for you, too.

Spending time with your hosts will be the best way to experience the culture first hand, and learning to communicate with them is a learning experience all on its own.

Lastly, you’ll work alongside other Projects Abroad participants from all over the world, meaning your cultural exchange isn’t limited to just your destination. You’ll work as part of a team and make friendships that can last a lifetime.

You could land in Kenya to volunteer and experience the local culture, then leave speaking some Swahili, Japanese, and German, with a new list of contacts in your phone.
