Is volunteer work for high school students in Vietnam right for me?
Do you enjoy working with young children? Are you interested in travelling and exploring Asia? Do you want to do both while giving back at the same time? This High School Special gives you the chance to do all of this in a single trip!
Our High School Special in Vietnam is specifically designed for teenagers. You’ll work and travel with a group of volunteers your age, and Projects Abroad staff are with you at all times for support and safety. We’ve also organised cultural and social activities, along with a weekend trip, to keep you busy.
This is a great way to travel and add experience to your CV. You’ll also develop your personal skills, like teamwork, leadership, and planning. This kind of experience will help you stand out in applications and interviews, which can help your studies and future career.
You don’t need any experience to join. You’ll support the work of local teachers and caregivers, and our staff are right there with you to give help and advice.
This project runs over fixed dates in the summer for two weeks at a time. You can pick the dates that best fit your schedule.

What will I do on the Childcare & Community Project in Vietnam?
The specific work you do will depend on where you are placed at a daycare centre or special needs centre. It could include the following types of activities:
- Support local staff by helping children learn through play
- Do sports activities with children to promote physical exercise
- Spend time painting and refurbishing child care centres
- Explore Vietnamese culture and landscapes around Hanoi
Your work will focus on the following activities:
Support local staff by helping children learn through play
For local teachers and caregivers, you’ll become an invaluable pair of helping hands. You’ll support their work mainly by helping children learn through play. You could do activities like:
- Plan and play educational games
- Do arts and crafts
- Read stories
- Teach the ABCs and 123s
- Play sports
You’ll also encourage the children to practise good hygiene every day. This would involve doing things like making sure they wash their hands properly before eating.
Do sports activities with children to promote physical exercise
Some of our placements work with children with physical disabilities. Playing sports and doing simple physical activities can go a long way with improving their mobility and fitness. With the staff, you can help the children take part, and have fun. This is also a great opportunity to teach kids about the benefits of working as a team!
Spend time painting and refurbishing child care centres
While at your placement, you can team up with your group to make the placement more colourful and exciting for the children. You could add fresh coats of paints and even paint an educational mural on a classroom wall. You can also get out the coloured cardboard and crayons, and make flashcards, posters, or other educational materials.
The materials you leave behind will benefit the children and staff for a long time after you’ve left.
Explore Vietnam
When you’re not working, we have plenty of social and cultural activities for you to enjoy. You’ll be with your group the whole time, and Projects Abroad staff are there to supervise constantly. On the weekend, we’ll take you on a sightseeing trip to the countryside. Be prepared to see and do a lot, and stuff yourself with delicious spring rolls and noodle soups!
Where in Vietnam will I work?
Hanoi
Hanoi is the second largest city in Vietnam with around 7.5 million people. With Projects Abroad staff at your side, you’ll navigate your way through busy streets filled with thousands of motorcycles, Vietnam’s primary mode of transport.
Around the city are rural villages and endless fields of rice paddies where farmers and water buffalo work tirelessly. When you’re not working, we’ll make sure you get to explore some of this countryside and learn about Vietnam’s history with your group.
What are the aims and impact of this project?
The main aim of this project is to support local teachers and caregivers at disadvantaged daycare and special needs centres.
In Vietnam, many of the centres we work with are understaffed, and lack resources. The local staff are dedicated, but they need extra support. At these placements, there are also large numbers of children with physical or mental disabilities. Most of the time, these disabilities are a legacy of Agent Orange, a chemical used during the Vietnam War.
You’ll become part of our long-term efforts to help these children. You’ll focus on helping them learn through play, and being an extra pair of helping hands for staff.
Join us in Vietnam and work with a group of volunteers your age to support the work of local teachers and caregivers.

Management plans
Measuring our impact
